What HeyGen AI Is
HeyGen is a browser-based AI video creation platform for producing presenter-led, narrated, and localized videos without recording every take yourself. You can generally choose an AI avatar, provide a script, select a voice and language, customize scenes and visuals, and render the result as a video. Depending on the feature and account plan available to you, HeyGen can also work with images, uploaded media, presentations, custom avatars, voice cloning, captions, and video translation. HeyGen: Create AI Videos with Your Personal Avatar
In practical terms, HeyGen AI is not a single “make any video from one sentence” button. It is a collection of video-generation tools built around several inputs:
- A script or prompt that determines what is said
- An avatar that appears as the presenter
- A synthetic or cloned voice that reads the script
- Scenes and visual assets such as backgrounds, images, text, and video clips
- Languages and captions for accessibility or localization
- An export or sharing workflow for the finished video
The platform is particularly suited to explainers, internal training, onboarding, product demonstrations, sales messages, social media clips, educational material, and multilingual versions of existing videos. It is less suitable when you need highly specific physical acting, complex cinematic movement, documentary authenticity, or frame-by-frame control comparable to a conventional video editor.
How to Use HeyGen AI to Make a Video
The exact labels and layout can change as HeyGen updates its products, but the basic workflow is consistent. Start by deciding what the viewer should learn or do, then build the video around that purpose rather than beginning with an avatar or visual effect.
1. Define the audience and objective
Before opening the editor, write down:
- Who will watch the video?
- What should they understand or do afterward?
- Where will the video appear?
- How long does it need to be?
- Do you need one language or several?
A short product announcement, a five-minute training lesson, and a customer-support explanation require different structures. For example, a useful instructional video normally needs a clear sequence of steps, while a social-media video benefits from a fast opening and a single central idea.
A simple brief might look like this:
Audience: new employees
Objective: explain how to submit an expense report
Length: approximately two minutes
Tone: friendly and direct
Format: landscape for the learning portal
This brief helps you choose the aspect ratio, script length, avatar style, and amount of on-screen text.
2. Open the video creation workspace
After signing in, create a new video in HeyGen’s Studio or choose the relevant creation tool in the dashboard. HeyGen’s Studio workflow is designed around writing or importing a script, selecting an avatar, adjusting voice settings, and customizing the resulting scenes. Create your first video in our Studio!
Depending on the account and interface version, you may encounter options such as:
- A blank studio project
- A text-to-video or prompt-based generator
- An avatar video
- A template
- An imported presentation or document
- A video translation tool
- A custom or personal avatar workflow
Choose the simplest route that matches the job. A blank Studio project offers more direct control. A prompt-based generator may be faster for a first draft, but you should still inspect and revise the generated script and visuals.
3. Choose an avatar
An avatar is the on-screen presenter. HeyGen provides prebuilt avatars with different appearances, voices, clothing styles, and presentation characteristics. Choose one that fits the context rather than selecting solely on visual appeal.
Consider:
- Audience expectations: A formal training module may call for a restrained, professional presentation style.
- Subject matter: A technology explainer and a children’s educational video may need different visual personalities.
- Pronunciation and language: Test the avatar with difficult names, technical terms, and abbreviations.
- Framing: A close-up may work for a personal message, while a wider composition leaves room for diagrams or captions.
- Consistency: Use the same avatar and voice across a course or series when continuity matters.
You can usually switch the selected avatar from the avatar controls in the Studio. HeyGen’s official Studio guide describes selecting an avatar and changing it from the editing interface. Create your first video in our Studio!
A custom avatar, sometimes described as a personal avatar or Digital Twin, is different from selecting a stock avatar. It is intended to represent a real person and may reproduce that person’s appearance and delivery. Creating one requires the person’s authorization. HeyGen’s documentation states that a consent video is required for each video-based Digital Twin as part of its AI safety process. Recording your Consent Video
Do not upload someone else’s likeness, voice, or footage without appropriate permission. Consent should cover the intended use, audience, duration, distribution channels, and whether the material may be translated or reused. For a company spokesperson, obtain organizational approval as well as the individual’s permission.
4. Write or import the script
The script is the most important input. AI avatars can make poorly written material appear polished, but they cannot fix unclear reasoning, unsupported claims, or an incorrect procedure.
A good script usually contains:
- A direct opening that establishes the topic
- Short sentences with one idea at a time
- Spoken transitions between sections
- Explicit explanations for unfamiliar terms
- A clear final instruction or takeaway
Write for speech, not for a page. A sentence that looks concise in writing may sound dense when spoken aloud. Avoid long lists of parenthetical qualifications, excessive punctuation, and complicated nested clauses.
For example, this is more natural:
In this video, you’ll learn how to submit an expense report. First, open the finance portal. Next, select “New report” and enter the purchase date.
This is less suitable for an avatar:
The following procedure, which applies to most ordinary employee purchases unless otherwise specified by the finance team, should be completed through the portal.
Break a long project into scenes. One scene might introduce the subject, another might explain the first step, and a later scene might show an example. Scene boundaries make it easier to change a visual, pause the presenter, or revise one section without rebuilding the entire video.
If you use a prompt-based generator, specify the audience, tone, language, duration, structure, and visual requirements. For example:
Create a two-minute onboarding video for new employees.
Explain how to submit a travel expense report in four steps.
Use a friendly, professional tone and short spoken sentences.
Include an opening title, one visual cue for each step, and a final reminder
to keep receipts. Do not invent policy details.Treat the generated result as a draft. Check every instruction, proper noun, date, product name, and policy statement against the original source material.
5. Select the voice and language
Choose the voice after reviewing the script, because a voice that sounds appropriate in a sample may not suit the subject matter or the full narration. Listen for pronunciation, pace, emphasis, and how the voice handles acronyms and numbers.
Improve the script for pronunciation when necessary:
- Spell out an acronym on its first use.
- Add punctuation where a spoken pause is needed.
- Replace ambiguous abbreviations.
- Use phonetic guidance only when the editor supports it and the result remains understandable.
- Split a long sentence if the voice runs through it without natural emphasis.
Do not assume that selecting a language automatically guarantees native-level pronunciation of every name or technical term. Test a short sample before generating the complete video. If a specialized term is repeatedly mispronounced, consider rephrasing it, adding a pronunciation hint, or recording a human voice for that portion.
6. Build scenes and add visuals
A talking avatar should support the explanation, not compete with it. Add visuals when they improve comprehension:
- Screenshots for software procedures
- Diagrams for processes
- Product images for demonstrations
- Short background clips for context
- On-screen keywords for essential points
- Captions for viewers who cannot or prefer not to use audio
Use one visual purpose per scene. A crowded layout with a presenter, long paragraphs, decorative animation, and several unrelated images makes the video harder to follow. Keep important text large enough for the intended viewing environment, especially on mobile screens.
When showing an application or website, use current, authorized screenshots and remove confidential information. A generated avatar can explain a process, but viewers still need accurate interface labels and visual evidence of where to click.
HeyGen also supports workflows in which a script, visual assets, or other inputs are combined into a more complete generated video. The available controls depend on the selected product and account, so inspect the generated scenes rather than assuming that every asset has been placed correctly. HeyGen: Create AI Videos with Your Personal Avatar
7. Preview and revise
Preview the video before exporting it. Review both the content and the presentation.
Content review
Check that:
- The opening states the subject clearly.
- The avatar says exactly what the script intends.
- Instructions appear in the correct order.
- On-screen text matches the narration.
- Examples and numbers are accurate.
- No private, copyrighted, or unauthorized material has been included.
- The final call to action is specific.
Delivery review
Check for:
- Awkward pauses
- Incorrect pronunciation
- Unnatural emphasis
- Lip-sync or facial-movement problems
- Abrupt scene changes
- Text that appears too briefly
- Visuals that do not match the narration
- Captions that contain transcription errors
Do not judge only from the editor preview. Watch the rendered file in the same type of player or device your audience will use. A title that is readable in a large editing window may be too small on a phone.
8. Generate and export the video
When the draft is ready, render or generate the video using the available export control. Account limits, resolution options, watermarks, export formats, and commercial-use terms can vary by plan and may change over time, so verify the conditions shown in your HeyGen account before relying on a particular output option.
Save the final video with a useful filename and retain the source project, script, approvals, and media licenses. Keeping the editable project matters when a product interface changes, a policy is updated, or a translated version needs correction.
Using HeyGen for Translation and Localization
HeyGen includes video-translation workflows that can produce localized versions using audio translation or lip-sync approaches. Its language support documentation distinguishes between translation methods and lists the languages supported by the feature; language availability and exact behavior can change, so confirm the current options in the product. Video Translation: Languages We Support
A practical localization workflow is:
- Upload or select the source video.
- Choose the target language.
- Select the available voice or translation mode.
- Review the translated transcript.
- Check names, idioms, units, dates, and industry terminology.
- Review the audio and lip movements.
- Ask a fluent reviewer to approve the final version.
Literal translation is not always effective. A phrase that sounds natural in English may be confusing or overly formal in another language. Localization may also require changing decimal separators, currencies, measurement units, legal wording, examples, or references that are specific to one country.
For important customer, medical, legal, financial, or public-sector communications, use qualified human review. An AI translation may preserve the general meaning while still introducing a subtle but consequential error.
Common Problems and How to Solve Them
The avatar sounds unnatural
Shorten sentences, add punctuation, remove dense written language, and test a different voice. Scripts with clear paragraph breaks are usually easier to revise than one large block of text.
The video feels generic
Add audience-specific examples, screenshots, diagrams, and terminology that your viewers actually use. An avatar alone does not create authority; useful evidence and accurate explanation do.
The AI invents information
Use source material and explicitly instruct the generator not to add facts. Then verify the entire script manually. This is especially important for policies, specifications, prices, medical guidance, legal explanations, and security procedures.
The visual does not match the narration
Separate the script into smaller scenes and assign a clear visual purpose to each one. Replace decorative stock imagery with a screenshot, diagram, or caption when the viewer needs to understand a process.
The video is too long
Remove repeated introductions and background explanation, then keep one example that best demonstrates the point. Splitting a long lesson into chapters may be better than compressing every idea into rapid narration.
Responsible and Effective Use
HeyGen can reduce the time required to produce routine presenter videos, but it does not remove the need for editorial judgment. Identify synthetic presenters where that would help viewers understand the nature of the content, particularly when a realistic avatar could be mistaken for a real person speaking at the time of publication.
Use only media, voices, faces, trademarks, and personal data that you are authorized to use. Be especially cautious with impersonation, political messaging, testimonials, emergency information, and content that could cause viewers to believe a real person made a statement they did not make.
The strongest workflow is therefore not “generate and publish.” It is:
- Plan the viewer outcome.
- Write a verified script.
- Choose an appropriate avatar and voice.
- Build simple, relevant scenes.
- Preview and fact-check the result.
- Obtain required permissions and reviews.
- Export, label, and retain the editable source.

Best Practices for High-Quality Results
- Script for the Ear: Written prose frequently sounds unnatural when read aloud by neural text-to-speech models. Use conversational sentence structures, contractions (e.g., we'll, it's), and concise phrasing Create your first video in our Studio!.
- Balance Visual Pacing: Do not leave an avatar static on screen without movement for long periods. Introduce B-roll, switch between wide and circle-cut views, or bring up supporting graphic elements every 5 to 8 seconds to maintain viewer engagement HeyGen Video Creation Options and Workflows Guide.
- Control Acoustic Noise on Ingest: When training instant avatars or cloning voices, prioritize audio quality. Room reverb, HVAC hum, and low-grade laptop microphones introduce noise that degrades the synthetic voice model, producing metallic or robotic artifacts Official HeyGen AI Avatar Video Translation Features.
- Audit Subtitles and Translations: Automated translation engines can misinterpret industry-specific jargon or idioms. Always use the built-in transcript editor to review localized text before final delivery HeyGen Video Translation (2026): Voice Cloning, Plans ....
Platform Limitations and Boundary Conditions
While synthetic video tools simplify production, HeyGen has architectural limits:
- Complex Physical Interaction: Avatars cannot physically interact with real objects in the canvas (e.g., an avatar cannot realistically pick up your specific physical product or point precisely at an external prop). Visual product demonstrations are best handled by pairing the avatar alongside screen recordings or inset video boxes HeyGen: Create AI Videos with Your Personal Avatar.
- Dynamic Expressive Range: Avatars perform best in presentation, instructional, and conversational formats. Highly emotional deliveries—such as dramatic theatrical acting, shouting, or rapid physical comedy—can expose boundaries in neural facial rigging, causing visual artifacts around the jaw and neck.
- Turnaround Dependencies: Because every generated frame requires neural rendering, producing long-form video (e.g., a 45-minute continuous lecture) requires substantial processing time and consumes high credit allocations compared to rendering traditional recorded timelines locally.

I'll research HeyGen's current capabilities before writing.Let me check current plan structure and consent/limitation details.## HeyGen in one paragraph
HeyGen is a browser-based generative AI platform for producing presenter-style videos without filming anything. You supply a script, a prompt, or an audio file; the platform renders a photorealistic digital avatar that speaks your words with synthesized or cloned voice and matched lip movement, then packages the result with scenes, captions, and B-roll. Its core capabilities are avatar video generation, voice synthesis and cloning, multilingual dubbing, and lip-synchronized video translation, which makes it most commonly used for marketing clips, product demos, e-learning, internal training, and personalized outreach. The company was founded in 2020 by Joshua Xu and Wayne Liang and is headquartered in Los Angeles.
To learn how to use HeyGen AI to make videos, it helps to understand that almost every workflow on the platform is a variation of the same four-step loop: describe or paste what should be said, choose who says it, choose how it sounds, then generate and refine. Everything else — templates, PDF import, translation, bulk generation, the API — is a different entry point into that same loop.
The four building blocks
Understanding these components separately makes the interface far less confusing than learning it menu by menu.
Avatars are the on-screen presenters. There are three broad categories: stock avatars from HeyGen's public library, photo avatars generated from a single still image, and custom avatars (also called digital twins), which are trained on footage of a real person and come in instant and studio variants. A free account typically has access to several hundred stock video avatars, a small number of photo avatar slots, and one custom avatar slot.
Voices can come from the built-in library, from a clone of your own voice, or from an uploaded audio recording you want lip-synced. Small adjustments to speaking rate and pause placement make a disproportionate difference to how human the delivery sounds, and the editor exposes controls for emphasis and for mirroring the pacing of a guide recording. Language coverage differs sharply by plan — free accounts are limited to a few dozen languages while paid tiers advertise well over a hundred.
Video Agent is the prompt-driven path. You describe the video you want, optionally attaching images or a PDF, pick a length and orientation, and the agent drafts the script, scene breakdown, avatar choice, voice, pacing, and captions. Crucially, it presents a plan for approval before rendering, which is where you catch off-message scenes cheaply. The same agent is reachable through HeyGen's own interface and through its API.
AI Studio is the manual editor, and it is script-first rather than timeline-first. Instead of dragging clips against a time ruler, you attach visual elements to specific words in the script, and the platform derives the timing. Generated elements remain editable afterwards, so changing text, colour, or layout does not necessarily force a full re-render.
Making your first video
A realistic first attempt takes roughly fifteen minutes, most of it spent writing rather than operating software.
- Create an account and choose an entry point. No installation is required; the platform runs in the browser. The dashboard offers Video Agent, a template gallery, a blank AI Studio project, and import options for PowerPoint or PDF. Beginners generally do better starting with Video Agent, because it makes the dozens of small decisions you have not yet learned how to make, then moving to templates or AI Studio once specific scenes need control.
- Pick a presenter. Start with a stock avatar for a first test. Photo avatars are a reasonable middle step, and a digital twin is worth the extra effort only once you know you will publish repeatedly.
- Add the script or prompt. Paste finished copy into the script box, type a prompt and let the agent write it, or upload your own voice recording. Short sentences matter more than people expect: long clauses make the avatar rush and clip its words. Phonetic respellings fix mispronounced names, and manually inserted pauses restore the rhythm a human speaker would add.
- Set the voice, language, and aspect ratio. Choose landscape for YouTube or portrait for Shorts and Reels before building scenes, since changing orientation later means re-laying-out everything. Audition several library voices on both laptop speakers and earbuds, because artefacts that are inaudible on one are obvious on the other.
- Layer in the supporting visuals. Product shots, screen recordings, captions, music, brand colours, and fonts go on top of the avatar track. Anchoring each callout to its corresponding script phrase is what keeps timing correct after later script edits.
- Generate, review, export. Rendering usually completes in minutes, after which the draft lands in your project folder. Export resolution is plan-dependent, with 1080p on mid tiers and 4K reserved for higher ones.
A separate path worth knowing: HeyGen can ingest an existing blog post, product page, or PDF deck and draft a scene-by-scene outline from it, which is usually faster than writing a video script from scratch for content you have already published.
Building a digital twin of yourself
A custom avatar is the feature most people actually want, and it has the strictest requirements. The traditional studio-quality route asks for two to five minutes of a person speaking naturally, front-facing and centred, ideally at 1080p or better, well lit, on a stable camera, with clean audio and a simple background. Varied expressions and gentle head movement during the recording produce a more expressive avatar than a rigidly still take; whatever the subject wears becomes the avatar's permanent wardrobe for that look. Practical recording advice converges on the same points: tripod, soft frontal light, uncluttered background, a calm opening stretch before you start speaking, and no jerky motion.
Newer avatar models have compressed this considerably. HeyGen's own materials describe building a digital twin from roughly thirty seconds to camera, or a faster start from a single front-facing photo. Coverage of the Avatar 5 generation, released in 2025, reports a photorealistic twin from as little as fifteen seconds of footage, with processing taking a few minutes and the end-to-end flow landing in the ten-to-fifteen-minute range depending on load. Because model names and their requirements change frequently, treat any specific footage minimum as a figure to confirm in the product rather than a fixed rule.
Consent, rights, and moderation
This is not optional boilerplate — it is a hard gate in the workflow, and it is the single most common reason a custom avatar fails to be created.
Every custom avatar requires on-camera identity verification from the person depicted, and HeyGen's stated position is that no verification means no avatar, with removal requests honoured. The platform's moderation policy puts the obligation on the user: you must obtain the explicit consent of the individual represented, and creating avatars of other people without it is prohibited. The consent flow itself asks the subject to record a short statement, sometimes including a spoken verification phrase, before training proceeds. Via the API, consent is tiered: webcam recording through a hosted consent page is available to all customers, while uploading a pre-recorded consent video or waiving the flow under an indemnity agreement is restricted to whitelisted enterprise accounts. Notably, consent applies only to digital twins — photo avatars and prompt-generated characters, which depict no identifiable real person, do not require it.
Two consequences follow. First, because avatar creation involves processing facial imagery, HeyGen describes handling biometric data for identity verification and, under GDPR, relies on explicit consent obtained during avatar creation — consent that can be withdrawn, though withdrawal may block further use of avatar features. Second, on rights: HeyGen states that users own the videos they generate, and that custom avatars are scoped to your workspace rather than shared into the public library. Stock avatars are licensed for generated video rather than owned by you, and commercial use of a custom avatar depends on your having secured the underlying consent and rights. Moderation combines automated scanning at generation time with human review, and the company's ethics statement commits to removing content that uses someone's likeness or voice without permission. For anything involving employees, clients, or public figures, this is an area where contract review by qualified counsel is worth more than general guidance, particularly given fast-moving right-of-publicity and synthetic-media legislation.
Plans, credits, and what limits output
HeyGen's pricing is deceptively simple at the headline level and genuinely complicated underneath, because output is metered in credits whose consumption rate depends on which avatar model you use.
| Tier | Approximate price | Practical ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | A handful of short, watermarked videos per month at 720p |
| Creator | ~$29/mo (lower annually) | Watermark removed, 1080p, longer videos, voice cloning |
